'Consumerism'

This piece emerged from my exploration of animal conservation and politicised art. Drawing inspiration from historical depictions of ‘St Jerome and the Lion’ and cultural symbolism of the lion as the king of the animal kingdom, the lion has been slain by humanity and lies amid the desertification of its natural habitat as a result of our collective intrusion into the natural world. Following on from my previous exploration of plastic pollution, I aimed to convey a more subtle reflection of this issue with landfill air vents scattered in the background given that these are a less common association with environmental concerns and hint at man’s attempt to bury his problems.

Amur Leopard

The Amur Leopard is the most endangered big cat in the world. Inspired by politicised art depicting the human-induced displacement of animals and the impact of consumerism on the animal world, the leopard is unknowingly walking into the human world of captivity which starkly contrasts the natural world. The leopard’s unique markings are gradually being left behind and some replaced with QR codes and Barcodes, illustrating the loss of character which the leopard faces in captivity as it, along with many other animals, become possessions of the zoo. Inspired by the subtle irony of Linda Herzog’s work, the plastic pollution’s recycling symbols hint at the lack of human concern.
